Title: Nanahemaa — “Queen Mother” Gourd Vase (My Wedding Dress Collection)

Medium: Hand-carved and painted gourd, mixed media embellishment
Dimensions: 24-inch circumference (approx. 7.6 in diameter) × 14 in height
Edition: One-of-a-kind original (My Wedding Dress collection)
Origin: Ghanaian-inspired design; created by Gourds By Fafa

Description: Nanahemaa (meaning “Queen Mother”) is a singular decorative vase that celebrates the formality and pageantry of Ghanaian modern bridal attire rendered as three-dimensional, home or museum art. Handworked from a dried gourd, the piece translates the visual language of Kente cloth and Akan symbolism into a sculptural vessel that reads as both objet d’art and reverent homage.

Design and Surface:

  • Richly colored Kente-inspired palette: saturated reds, greens, purples, black and yellows applied with layered pigments and careful brushwork to emulate woven textile rhythm and sheen.

  • Central motif: the Gye Nyame Adinkra symbol placed front-and-center as the compositional focal point, communicating transcendence and reverence.

  • Embellishment: the Gye Nyame and select Kente motifs are studded with rhinestones predominantly black on the primary symbol with selective red rhinestones accenting additional motifs — adding controlled sparkle and dimensionality while preserving a refined, dignified presence.

  • Finish: durable sealant with a subtle luster to protect surface color and embellishments while maintaining a tactile, handcrafted quality.

Condition: New. Museum-quality stabilization and sealing applied to ensure long-term preservation; suitable for display outside of direct sunlight and away from excessive humidity.

Provenance and Concept: Part of the "My Wedding Dress" collection, Nanahemaa interprets the ceremonial garments of contemporary Ghanaian women through form, color, and emblem. The naming and visual cues evoke royal lineage and maternal authority, capturing both elegance and cultural memory. Each decorative decision was made to balance authenticity of inspiration with contemporary decorative sensibility.

Display Suggestions:

  • Freestanding on a console, pedestal, or mantel where the front-facing Gye Nyame can be centered as a focal point.

  • Scaled to complement modern and transitional interiors; pairs well with natural woods, warm metals, and neutral textiles.

  • Not intended for holding water; use as a dry vase or sculptural object. Consider a faux floral arrangement or single sculptural branch for added height and contrast.

Shipping and Care:

  • Ships in 1-3 business days

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or moisture.
